Exploring Perth

What To Do With Your Free Time On A Business Trip In Perth

If you are in Perth on a business trip you will want to make the most of your free time to see what the city has to offer. As this is a business trip you probably don’t want to go spending lots of money and would rather save your hard earned cash to spend on holiday with family or friends. So here is a look at some great cheap and free things to do in Perth.

Ramble along the river

One of Perth’s most beautiful natural attributes is the Swan River which is just 6 kilometers to the east of Perth’s CBD. The river is lined by beautiful paths which you can either walk, or hire a bike to explore and see heritage buildings, ponds, and riverside parks. Alternatively you can take your hire bike on the train which links a number of different bike rides in different towns along the river.

Get out on the water

If you are looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush then head down to the Perth foreshore which is just a short walk away from the shops and cafes and you will find Perth Fun Cats. They hire out catamarans for just $35 for an hour or $80 for half a day, and have lifejackets for you to use. No experience is necessary but the winds are generally stronger in the afternoon. You will almost definitely get wet so remember to bring a spare set of clothes! Perth is also a good place to take boat trips out into the Indian Ocean or join cruise trips, which can range from good entertainment to food and wine tours. The number of water based sports available in Perth offers business tourists many ways to relax.

Get out of town

Located just 19 kilometers south west of Perth is the port of Fremantle, known as ‘Freo’ by the locals. It lies where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean. Trains and buses run regularly from Perth to Freo so getting there is cheap as chips, and it is easily accessible for an evening out after work. The town is rich in culinary diversity. Known as ‘Little Italy’ it obviously has lots of Italian food, but there are also plenty of Greek, Indian, Japanese, Thai, Turkish, Chinese and even Australian restaurants to meet all budgets.

Island life

Just a short ferry ride from Perth is one of Australia’s most popular islands, Rottnest Island. It is as popular with locals as it is tourists due to its relaxed atmosphere. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Perth then Rottnest is the perfect place for you. There aren’t even any cars on the island! If you are looking for budget accommodation then you won’t be disappointed with the great campsites on the island.

Hit the beach

Perth has some of the best beaches in the world with white sand and crystal clear water. It would be a crime to visit the city without sampling its gorgeous beaches, especially as they are free! If you have the choice hit the beach in the morning as the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon. Whether you want to just laze in the sun, swim, snorkel or surf the Perth beaches will meet your needs. There are strong rips and undercurrents at some of the beaches so make sure you pay attention to the lifeguards and stay within the safe swimming flags.

Be prepared

To make your own money go further while you’re exploring Perth get organized before you leave home and sort out your travel money. If you are travelling from abroad bear in mind that if you use your debit or credit card overseas you are likely to be charged fees by your bank. It is also wise to have some Australian dollars before you reach Perth as you may need to pay for taxis, tip hotel staff etc, and your debit card won’t be much use for that! Some credit companies explain that withdrawing cash on a credit card, or getting cash back while in Australia will be far more expensive than organizing the currency when at home. Prepaid cards are becoming a very popular way to spend abroad as if you choose carefully you won’t get charged any extra for using them, and they are accepted at most places that credit or debit cards are taken.

Perfectly Perth

If you are lucky enough to be in Perth on business and have the chance to get out and about you will soon see how much it has to offer and will probably find that you want to return when you have a bit more free time to explore the beautiful city.
